I’m currently sitting here eating this homemade healthy muesli recipe before heading off to the airport for a trip to Toronto. It’s been a pretty relaxing summer but we’re gearing up for a few weeks of travel madness. A couple of weddings thrown in just for good measure and let me tell you, I’m ready to let loose and party!
Organizing everything for a trip can be a tad chaotic and I’m grateful I have a full mason jar of this build your own muesli recipe for busy mornings where you don’t have a whole lot of time to prep breakfast. But before I gear up and head to the airport, let’s chat muesli…
What is the difference between muesli and granola?
Muesli and granola are both made of grains, nuts, seeds and sometimes dried fruits. But that’s where the similarities stop! Granola is usually mixed with a sweetener and an oil so all of the ingredients combine and clump together while baking. While you do toast a few ingredients in muesli, you don’t formally bake the mixture.

How to Eat Muesli
There are a ton of different ways you can eat muesli. Take your pick!
You can top your yogurt or cottage cheese with the muesli mix like granola. You can add muesli to a simmering liquid for a warm breakfast (making a mental note for this fall!). My personal favorite way to eat this is to soak the mixture. Portion out how much muesli you want to eat and then cover with water or your milk of choice. I personally prefer almond milk! Cover and put in the fridge overnight. In the morning, you’ll have a delicious breakfast waiting for you. Eat as is or top with fresh fruit and coconut flakes to take this to the next level.
You can also soak it in the morning for 10-20 minutes for a quick breakfast on the go.
I’m also a huge fan of this Bircher Muesli with fresh apples and banana. Just soak overnight!

How To Make This Muesli Recipe
There’s so many different ingredients that you can use to build your own muesli. We’re providing an optional muesli recipe but feel free to mix and match to nail the perfect recipe for you.
- oats
- nuts
- seeds
- dried fruit
- spices
I love making my own muesli because it comes together so quickly! Start by toasting your nuts and seeds in the oven for 10 minutes. While your nuts and seeds are toasting, chop the dates (or other dried fruit) and toss them in the cinnamon. The cinnamon will keep the dates from sticking to everything and infuses with the liquid once you soak the muesli mixture. After the nuts and seeds are done toasting, let them cool and then give them a quick chop. Mix everything with the oats and store in an airtight container.
